released 1.2rc1

released 1.2rc1

we just released a new tarball for the first release candidate in the next feature release (1.2):

source tarball

mac disk image

as a feature release, it comes with a lot of new goodies:

  • profiled denoising: adapt to the properties of your camera’s sensor (72 cameras already profiled for you).
  • lightroom import: convert some basic edits from your lightroom collection to darktable operations.
  • multi instance support: duplicate your modules and apply them more than one time with different settings.
  • improved usability for distorting modules (streamline spot removal in the presence of crop/rotate for example).
  • selective copy/paste of image processing.
  • new more intuitive keystone correction tool.
  • jpeg2000 support.
  • graphics magick import (support virtually all input image formats).
  • much faster thumbnail loading (if you can live with crappy embedded thumbnails).
  • incredibly lengthy list of small bug fixes, performance enhancements, and usability improvements.
  • new camera support (decode and color matrices).
  • dithering against banding.
  • sharper thumbnails in lighttable mode.
  • new oauth2 based picasa uploader.
  • and the final release 1.2 will contain a thoroughly overhauled user manual, proof read by natives (thanks heaps guys!).

  1. hey, the mac link does not seem to be working?
  2. Neither link appear to be valid at present.
NB The GIT version is at 1.2rc1 and is working.
  3. works for me, probably it has been fixed already
  4. I cannot find the picasa uploader, though you annouce it (new oauth2 based picasa uploader). I can live without it, but... did I miss something when building from source?
Thank your efforts to bring this awsome tool.
  5. You might be missing libjson-glib-dev.
  6. Very beautiful and powerful, but it lacks one thing.
when it is expected the use of brushes?
  7. Question answered in G+ community (I lacked some development packages). Thank you
  8. Is only the "generic poissonian" profile available for PROFILED DENOISE module?

I only checked it with Canon EOS 350D so far, but thought there are individual profiles for particular cameras.

I am talking about the linux version, 1.2rc1 from darktable-unstable ppa

    Thanks!
  9. that's a problem with auto-detection of your camera, model string in database wasn't exact, should be fixed in git now
  10. Thanks!
So maybe it's somehow related, but my lenses are not always correctly recognized. For example in the information box (last box of lighttable's left panel) the lens is displayed as (65535) while it is Canon EF-S 17-85 4-5.6 IS USM. In lens correction I need to select the lens manually, and even then the lens remains 65535 in the info panel.
  11. Great guys ! thanks you very much, Darktable is just amazing, and better and better at every release !
  12. Lens detection is handled by exiv2, maybe you have an old version, then upgrading it might help. Lens correction is another issue, module may not auto-select your lens even if it's detected correctly because of mismatch between exiv2 and lensfun databases.
  13. Thanks, great release, profiled denoise works great! I also noticed lots of other improvements all over the place. It's probably just me, but I didn't get really understand the keystone interface, even if it is more intuitive than before -- I'll need to rtfm.
  14. Got it working thanks to the suggestion. It seems (my?) EOS 350D doesn't write the lens type into exif correctly, but after adding it manually Darktable displays the right lens type and lens correction works properly.

Thank you very much for the great piece of software and help with my issue.
  15. Sorry I'm too much of a newbie to install this from a tarball, are the PPAs going to be upload soon?
  16. Should be online by now.
  17. Should be fixed and be working.
  18. 65535 typically means "manual lens".

  19. What it comes in this release, multinstance, is the first step on that direction. The next one, currently being worked on is the ability to draw masks with shapes. And the last one are brushes.

    Be patient.
  20. darktable has become my #1 photo tool (after years with UFRaw, RawStudio and Gimp), and I am very happy to see, that the development keeps on at high pace. You do a tremendous job.

The one thing I do not get along with is the lack of an easy to use and powerful sharpening tool. Neither Sharpen (which equals "mask unsharp") nor the Equalizer do it for me. It's the one thing I still do in the Gimp.

It's not all that bad - I can live with a two-program-workflow. If I had a wish, it would be a powerful and easy "sharpen" tool, though.
  21. Karl Huysmans on Tue Mar 26 19:08:17 2013:
Super! Love multi instance, very usefull.
  22. If I want stronger sharpening than the USM/Sharpen tool I usually go for the 'highpass' tool. Just activate that with blend mode as 'overlay' then, because it will probably be too sharpened, reduce the opacity to taste.

Have you tried this one yet?
  23. Gonçalo Marrafa on Thu Mar 28 12:06:31 2013:
I'm using ppa:pmjdebruijn/darktable-release-plus but it still hasn't 1.2rc uploaded yet. Any idea when it will be available?

PS: Please hurry up and add masks/brushes to Darktable. It's the only thing that still keeps me on AfterShot Pro. :)

    Great work guys!
  24. Steve Adler on Thu Mar 28 19:15:47 2013:
Be great if you could add a roaring ringtail (ubuntu 13.04) version of Darktable 1.2rc to the unstable repository. The current version is still on 1.1.4.
  25. I never publish release candidates on a Darktable Release (Plus) PPA.

They are as always available from my Darktable Unstable PPA:

    https://launchpad.net/~pmjdebruijn/+archive/darktable-unstable
  26. Since Raring isn't released yet, I'm not really supporting it yet... But... for rc2 I did just push a Raring build as well. It'll just take a few hours to build...
  27. Bartosz Neuman on Thu Apr 04 17:22:35 2013:
The lack of powerful sharpening tool is the only thing that prevents me from fully switching to Darktable. I really wish it had a Richardson-Lucy blind deconvolution sharpening (see rawtherapee).
